Maryland employers and employees, get ready for significant changes coming this summer. As part of the Time to Care Act of 2022, new Family and Medical Leave insurance requirements will soon take effect. This program is designed to offer partial wage replacement for workers taking leave to care for a new baby, a loved one, or to manage serious health conditions or disabilities.
Under the new law, employers with at least one W2 employee must begin withholding 0.45% of each employee’s income starting July 1. For larger businesses with 15 or more employees, the employer is required to match this contribution. These funds will be deposited into the State Insurance Fund for one year, after which eligible employees can receive up to 12 weeks of benefits—up to $1,000 per week.
Special guest Glenn Arrington, an insurance broker with Group Benefit Strategies, joins Bowers Law to break down your options. Glenn discusses whether employers should self-fund this benefit or opt for private insurance solutions. He also highlights the importance of early preparation and even invites local business owners to attend an upcoming hybrid event hosted by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce for more in-depth guidance.
