Two Critical Coverages You Should Never Waive

Maryland drivers, listen up — there are two coverages on your auto insurance policy that you should never waive: Enhanced Underinsured Motorist Coverage (EUIM) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Attorney Joe Bowers of Bowers Law is sounding the alarm because more and more drivers are unintentionally giving up tens of thousands of dollars in potential coverage due to sneaky waivers buried in their insurance paperwork. Don’t let that be you.

What Is Enhanced Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

EUIM became the default coverage for new policies in Maryland as of July 1, 2024, but there’s a catch: you can still waive it — and insurers aren’t always upfront about what that means. EUIM allows your coverage to stack on top of the at-fault driver’s coverage, instead of just subtracting from it. That means if the at-fault driver has a $1 million policy and you have a $30,000 policy with EUIM, you could access $1,030,000 in total coverage. Without EUIM? You’d get only what the other driver has.

Don’t Get Tricked Into Waiving It

Unfortunately, many people are waiving EUIM without even knowing it, especially if they buy insurance online. Joe warns that insurers will slip waiver authorizations into electronic signature stacks, so you could be signing away this powerful coverage for the sake of saving a couple of dollars a month. The result? When you really need it — after a major crash — it’s not there to protect you.

PIP: The Unsung Hero of Your Policy

In addition to EUIM, Joe strongly urges drivers not to waive PIP coverage. PIP is no-fault coverage that pays for your medical bills and lost wages, even if you caused the accident. Most importantly, using PIP cannot raise your insurance rates — Maryland law is crystal clear on this. Joe has reviewed thousands of policies and says the cost-to-benefit ratio is so good, waiving PIP makes no sense in almost any situation.

How to Make Sure You’re Protected

The best way to avoid these costly mistakes is to work with a live, local insurance agent — not an online form, and not an 800 number. Joe offers free policy reviews for all Maryland drivers, no strings attached. He’ll tell you exactly what you’re waiving, what you’re paying for, and what coverage actually means in real-life accident scenarios. And yes, he’ll even do this for people who aren’t clients and never plan to be.
